Tulip Regrets

I took the time this fall to plant tulip bulbs around the property of CdlV, with the hopes that Spring would breath new life into the landscape that (as of right now) was covered with feet of snow. I must have spent hours planting each one in groups with allium, and Peruvian daffodils, and snow drops only to see squirrels digging them up each day, carefully avoiding the daffodils. I regret not forcing them in the house this year, and now it looks like I'm too late.

Remember my orange tulips last spring?

Orange tulips are my favorite flower, hands down! I planted these in our zinc urn and they did very well in the living room until the early summer. Forcing tulips isn't difficult (so I hear) but I believe you have to start very early (November) to get a beautiful tulip in the spring. If I'm wrong here, please let me know!

But since I figured I wouldn't have orange tulips this year, well - at least forced orange tulips, I'd spend some time looking at how beautiful they look in other rooms:

Yes, orange tulips ... these pictures only make me love them more, how about you? What's your favorite flower?

  2. Hands down my favorite are white tulips. Artie, I did the same one year and between the ground moles, squirrels and deer, I didn't get one bloom. Inside right now, I have almost thirty purple and white hyacinths, paperwhites, a new type of minature green amaryllis and about sixty crocuses. It's intoxicating when I walk in and as a friend states, it smells like a French you know what in here. lol

  4. Yellow princess alstroemeria. Because they grow in my garden despite being neglected and look good in every room of my house. Love those orange tulips though. Especially the parrots.

  7. I have to second G in Ct regarding chickenwire. I tuck some in the ground over the areas I have planted bulbs, and also put pieces in my outdoor pots and planters to discourage squirrels from digging in them.
I'm a great lover of carnations and roses.

  9. My favorite flower is whatever I have -- I love them all! but I do like tulips -- I like the way they "fall" and spill out of vases -- I have a couple of "tulip vases" that are perfect for them.

I've never forced tulips -- but do force paperwhites and hyacinths. I have some hyacinths chiling and realize I should have chilled a bit earlier -- they may be blooming at the same time as those outside are!

  11. Tulips are my favorite...I love white ones. We bought 50 bulbs in Holland, MI this fall and planted them in a bed in front of the house. We did it 2 years ago and they were stunning...but, they didn't come back up last year. We have the wrong soil in Illinois for them and had to do some special stuff (can you tell my husband did the work) to prepare to replant them. Hopefully, I'll have some pictures of exotic black, ruffled-edged greens and orange-pinks!

    Have a wonderful day,

  13. I do love white tulips in the house! But every year about this time I start paper whites...at home and at the office. Thier spicey scent chases away the winter blues...I can say that ... cause I'm from Brrrr...Syracuse! :-) Tami E.
