A Wood Query ...

The fireplace at CdlV is non-functioning, and was built that way, though I'm not sure why. There is an electrical outlet in the back of the brick monster, but absolutely no way to burn a fire in the thing. I've put ferns in the fireplace, a basket, even one of my larger blue and white wedding jars, but now I'm thinking of this fun and interesting display.

Thoughts?

  1. Hi Artie,
I really like this idea. I think it would give your non working fireplace presence and be visually pleasing too. I say go for it!

  2. I like this for cooler months for a non working fireplace but for the summer months I like to back the fireplace with a trifold mirror and place live plants on top of rocks, I also add a light and it really looks pretty cool, just a thought!! Kathysue

  3. I, too, love this look for a warm wintertime appearance.

Kathysue's idea sounds perfect for summertime heat.

  5. oh my...i don't know...if you look at the fireplace as a frame and the wood as a painting...perhaps...no...i don't think i like the idea...a bit too contrived for me... (and i have the feeling everyone and their brother is going to do this idea)...i would rather have the fireplace with wood on a heavy grate... as if it were waiting to be lit..and something lovely on the mantle with spills...i am just too old and english i suppose...

  6. I see what you are saying but it does seem too staged and contrived, ala Laney.

You are such a creative soul I think you can come up with something unique to really wow!

  7. I think it is an interesting idea... especially for winter. Have you considered a HUGE log with holes drilled to hold lots of candles of all different widths, and heights?

  8. Make sure you kill the bugs and spiders before you bring in the wood to stack! Ferns sound better or a fabulous screen! ♥♫

  9. I liked the idea until I read a post on Catalog Living. It's a humorous blog that just reminds me not to take things too seriously.

  10. I notice a common denominator in all the fireplace surrounds that you feature, and that is they are all in white. So, I therefore am wondering if such an arrangement of stacked wood would have the same impact in yours?

    Just a thought Artie. -Brenda-

  11. It's kinda cool, but I think Mrs Ben has a point...I like the candle idea, although 'everyone' has done it. I'm wondering if you might think of putting a gas fire in there. Certainly it could be retrofitted, no? I know that gas doesn't need a chimney...Candace (Devine Design..lol) uses them all the time!
I also think that having a white fireplace makes a difference.

Whoa! check me out and all my advice...lol...hope to see you this weekend!

  12. Hi Artie,

I have been visiting you for a while now and this is the first time I have left a comment!! Naughty I know, anyways I have seen these fireplaces too and have actually seen this used as a headboard. I like this as a sculptural thing but wondered what it would be like if there were spiders in the wood or do you have to keep changing it out incase bugs decide to make it their home?? Hope this helps.
    Take care

  13. Artie,

Isn't that electric outlet for a electric fireplace insert? I've been looking at them for years now, for the wall behind our garden tub, in our MB. Of course my husband doesn't see the need for one.:( Dimplex has a nice selection and some of the flames look very real.
I agree with some of the others who posted, watch out for bugs in the wood. My husband put a wood burner in front of our fireplace opening last fall, which I hate by the way, and I'm killing bugs all the time in the winter. And I'm always spraying the wood too.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  14. Not so much...if the firepalce doesn't work tha what do you need the wood for?? Unless there is another working fireplace somwhere else.

    Happy Sunday

  15. We had a wood burning fireplace at the farm .. There was always a mess
with the wood and sometimes bugs are in it.
I now have a gas fireplace , life is easy now..
Nice room, and a good post..

  17. Hi Artie, I would be a little weary of bugs! Electric fireplace inserts have really come a long way and a lot more realistic than in the past. A lot of the gorgeous historic homes here use them because it is no longer safe to build a fire in their chimneys.

  18. I, too, thought of the Catalog Living joke I saw about this. Doesn't work for me...on either form or function...hmmmm...what else ya got?
