Kitchen Inspiration Month: Day Four - Exposed Hinges

There are several hinge types for kitchen cabinets. For our kitchen, (note not all kitchens) I prefer exposed hinges as they give a more period feeling to our kitchen. Lots of pictures here, but before we get started let's see the difference:

Now, for some kitchens, I believe that exposed hinges can be too busy, but lucky for me - I don't have enough doors to worry about hardware being too busy. Plus they didn't have European hinges in 1923 when my kitchen was built! Ha-ha. Alright here we go:

Told you this picture would be in nearly every post!

  1. Hidden hinges all the way! I don't have them - but... next kitchen! Do we always want what we don't have ????? I am loving this month! Kitchens are my utopia. Enjoy the weekend.

  2. I find the exposed hinges to be distracting. I don't think a period house(or 1920s house) suffers at all from having the more modern hidden hinges.

  3. Love them. I feel it really makes the cabinets look custom. Beautiful kitchens here!

  4. I love hinges... But would you believe it's totally out of fashion in France. When I ask for them (I'm "kitchen hunting" right now), people look at me like I'm crazy and basically point at the exit door and I run out of the store!!!
I'm keeping some of your pictures in my inspiration file...

I love and adore exposed hinges (cannot stand hidden ones) but I paint them!

Ha! I grew up in Pasadena in old houses......will do a blog post about this! thanks!

  6. I think the hinges do make an older house look more authentic, however my house is 36 years old, and the "period" it was built in is the 70s. I think the outer hinges would look too old in mine, but I do love them in all of the pictures you posted. I especially love the one picture w/marble tops, black island and white perimeter cabinets. It had the bread and bread board on the island....very elegant!

  7. Here is an honest but different reaction to exposed hinges... Artie, I believe that you said "busy"... I would say it looks like a bug problem...Orkin help! ... yikes... not my bag...lol!
