Book Review: Great Houses, Modern Aristocrats


This fall the book market has been flooded with gorgeous interior design and coffee table books. Released yesterday, Great Houses, Modern Aristocrats by James Reginato certainly lands at the top of the list. Each page celebrates the beauty and opulence of some of the most remarkable and finest homes in England and Ireland, along with the fascinating stories and histories of the leading aristocratic bloodlines that call these residences home.

Any great interior design loving Anglophile is keenly aware of the history of manor homes in England. A grand home there often becomes inherited, one patriarch to the next, occupied by the same family for centuries. During those years stories develop, scandals arise, the economic make up of a country changes, and all of that sticks to the walls, so to speak. In Great Houses, Modern Aristocrats, almost as if on a docent led tour, James Reginato peels back these remarkable stories, layer by layer.
