Some Bath Decisions ...

Having taken the time to really think about the steps of this reno, the finishes, the accessories, the paint, and the overall feel - I feel like I've put together the pieces here to include the most fantastic of the things that make me happy each and every day. Afterall, shouldn't your bathroom be fantastic? So, in the spirit of sharing the enthusiasm and excitement of the beginning of this process, here are a few pairings I can't wait to put together in the new room:

European linen and blue and white porcelain. European linen has a slub that more processed linens do not, so the texture is almost a soft burlap. When we started thinking about shower curtains for CdlV's new bath, I had my mind and heart set on the Bosporus Toile in flax, but, Scott was not on board. So after a few visits to the fabric store, we set in on the feel and texture of a gorgeous European linen we found online. The sample next to my collection of blue and white porcelain is like seeing two best friends reunited.

Luxurious turkish cotton towels in white, monogrammed with of course: CdlV, along with the beautiful sconces in satin nickel to coordinate with the bath and sink faucets.

Scott's orchids in lime washed terracotta pots, and glass and satin nickel bath coordinates, which will sit atop a great chinois faux bamboo table, along with a great glass lamp, just beneath the satin nickel towel warming bars.
And subway tile will surround the tub, simple in white, with perhaps one black band near the top in a smaller rope braided tile only 5" tall. And the satin nickel rain head shower head, tub faucet, along with a handheld that rotates ... I'm so ready for that. :)
Thoughts so far?

  1. Artie, it sounds simple, completely elegant, gorgeous, and serene-everything a bath should be. Can't wait to see the final reveal.

  2. I think we tend to overdo our baths. They are BATHROOMS for pitty sake -- and I think the simplier the better. Your choices sound fantastic! I've been thinking about the walls of our bath (and ceiling and ceiling fixxture) -- it's a bit too "over the top" now IMO. But the bones (white tile, white tile floor, white fixtures, chrome) are good and changing walls is an easy thing. I've been admiring those types of baths more and more -- like those you posted.

  3. I love luxurious bathrooms. After all bathrooms and kitchen set the tone for the home. I'm loving your choices. The one thing I love about the FIL apartment in Manhattan is the Subway tile. You can't go wrong with that.

  4. I did a to-the-lathing-bathroom re-do on a bathroom in our 1858 Greek Revival in black & white tile, etc. and I love it even more 3 years later! I wanted the bathroom to look as it would have in 1910 when the first bathroom was installed (which this bathroom was - it was the original sewing room in the house). I used B&W octagonal flooring too and it looks great.

I'm planning another bathroom re-do using marble, all white octagonal flooing and subway tile, nickel fixtures, etc., all based on the success of the first re-do. I think it is a classic look that doesn't age a house the way a more specific, over-the-top redo might. I'm planning on a custom vanity as I have some great local resources for vintage marble and I'll be including several vintage bamboo pieces (love 'em!!) in the room, too. I collect Chinese export so I have squirreled away a few pieces to hang. I love all white towels and its all I've had for years but I'm going to have some white bath towels monogrammed in either deep blue or deep pink in a Chinese-style type face...the ultimate touch?

Good luck and let's see the finals!

P.S. I did two black tile rows at the top: one in the twist and one in the same tile. I like it but would have preferred just the twist - very elegant!

  9. Doing my son's bathrm...tumbled carrara mosaic floor with gray dot looks great. Tried a crackle glaze subway tile for around the tub and it looked so blue-ish that I actually removed it after 25% was done (yikes). Will start again with standard (very) white subway. Live and learn. Love all your inspiration pictures...it's helped me stay focused. Trish

  11. We have 3 bathrooms in our house...none of them are large enough to be fantastic, even if we gutted them and started from scratch. I'm trying to give mine a more upscale, less generic 90's look. I took a big kitchen over a big bath when we went house hunting!

I can't wait to watch the transformation. I love some of the things your have selected.
