Kitchen Inspiration Month: Day One - Brick Floors

Kitchen inspiration is all around us, but sometimes it's hard to find it all in one place. We have been, and are still in the middle of a kitchen renovation at CDLV, and I've been collecting inspiring photos for almost a year.

Since February is a short month, and in my neck of the woods, miserable; (cold, white, wet, and well - not all that inspiring) I'm calling February Kitchen Inspiration month here on the blog. In an effort to make February skip-to-the-loo my darlin' just a little faster for me, and inspire both of us, I've got a whole month of inspiring kitchen photos lined up! All of which have fostered a change in the CDLV kitchen!

Day One: Brick Floors
Brick floors are a very southern element when used inside of the house. I find them beautifully organic and still very elegant and sophisticated. A lot of people hesitate thinking that install and upkeep will be difficult, but with all of the products online now, install is as easy as ceramic, and upkeep is easier than marble or wood. Let's take a peek shall we?

So you starting to love them too?

  1. That first picture is divine, the most perfect kitchen ever. I really hope you're thinking of installing brick in your kitchen Artie. We have an old brick floor in our guest house, (not as luxurious as it sounds - it was the original 2-car garage) and I love it. It's scattered with rugs of all different types, white slipcovers! You won't regret it!

  3. Lovely images. At first, I thought brick would be really cold on the feet, but got to thinking that it couldn't be any more cold than tile, right? Certainly a very southern look like you said - but you've given us some very good examples. Can't wait to see what you do.

  8. First picture... appears to be the winner! The color is easy to live with. Looks very difficult to install but oh so worth it.

  9. We had saltillo tiles at our previous house in the kitchen. With the right sealer, they were a breeze to keep clean. The uneven nature of the tiles did make standing and cooking or cleaning a little uncomfortable after a time. They were spectacular, though. Very similar to the 4th picture.

  10. Artie I love when the bricks are laid in a herringbone pattern! Wonderful lighting examples as well!

  12. I love the looks of a brick floor. We don't see them much in this part of the country because of the movement of the earth during winter, etc. It causes a slight shift in buildings and makes that type of flooring a problem..but I love them anyway! xo Diana

  14. The brick floors are beautiful, especially in the 7th image. i prefer the lighter beige, sand and terra rosa colors to the red brick tones. Coincidentally, I am in the middle of a kitchen reno myself. The demo and prep happened over the last two weeks, and the contractor just installed most of the perimeter base cabinets today. It is very exciting. I cannot wait to see what you do.
    All the best...Victoria

  15. I have always loved brick on floors. I also love them mixed with wood. Have you noticed more images of decor with brick? I am seeing floors, and walls. We will see!

  16. I wish I had considered brick, when we did our remodel a few years ago. Travertine is pretty, right after its been cleaned, but shows everything soon after.

  18. Absolutely love a red brick floor, Artie. Nothing more beautiful, except maybe the post you did on herringbone hardwood. There's a place here that has the brick floor throughout, a little boutique shop, and it looks so good with the linen slipcovered furniture they sell. I hope you use it in your house! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

  19. The only thing I'd worry about with them, Artie, is that the clean up might be rigorous. I feel like even though people say it's a bad idea, wood floors in a kitchen are actually the easiest clean up. No grooves, like in tile or in this case, Brick. But I suppose that a good vacuum would be easier to use for clean up than a mop, don't you think? I'm sure you've thought through those sorts of things - but I had to say it! haha! Gigi
