Sneak Peek

If you're following me on Instagram, you've already seen this. But - for those of you who aren't on instagram - and for those of you who follow so many people things get lost in the shuffle, I present to you a sneak peek at the new decor of my living room.

I know you've been wondering what the heck was going on over here and so I figure it was probably best to polish things up a bit and get a sneak peek photo for y'all to take in until I get it all pulled together.

One thing I learned living in a space that is about 830 square feet (BTW: That's smaller than some of these other blogger's bedrooms) is that every room needs to have function. I fought against that for a long time, deciding I needed to have pretty photos for the blog and instagram, and leaving more than 1/2 of the VERY SMALL apartment unused most of the time, although inspiring.

So with a new goal in mind - having functional and beautiful spaces - I switched it up. I'm still not finished, but in this view you can take in what has probably become my favorite piece of furniture, a Scandinavian pine cupboard turned television cabinet. It's the PERFECT size to hold nearly all of the design books I kept after paring down, and random TV equipment. Wires from the television are hidden as best as possible with beautiful coffee table books and a bowl I bought in Lima, Peru filled with moss.

Another of my trinkets in the background, a 200 POUND concrete urn, with the most beautiful patina holds a dracena tree that I've yet to kill over that last 3-years, potted with fresh moss I collected from around trees in our neighborhood.

The space will feature slipcovered furniture mostly due to the ease of washing as we live with two rambunctious pups. The chairs seen here are done in the most glorious shade of gray linen. The same gray, luckily and unplanned, as the cotton roller shades you see on the windows. Curtains are no longer, that space now filled with art and sun-washed turtle shells.

I'm still looking for a large deacons bench for in front of the window, which will have a striped linen cushion, and some gorgeous antique textile pillows.

Wanna shop the look?

True Friendship Part TWO: The Reveal

Alright, so you've read all about the renovation process, right? If not, go here. Now, for the reveal photos. There are a few things that are left to complete, but we accomplished so much with such a limited budget and an even tighter timeline.

I don't want to clutter up with a lot of pictures of the before - and quite honestly, there aren't a lot of before pictures anyway. But, if you want to compare - go here, and get a glimpse at where we started.

 Are you ready!??

One of the biggest changes in the dining room came in the form of color. The room used to be a deep, barn red and now is a light and fresh taupe with crisp white trim and built-ins, which we added. The old Ikea chandelier was thrown out, and replaced with this beautiful fake crystal chandelier. Honestly, people, they're fake! Want one for yourself? Get it here!

The new built-ins are home to lots of decorative stuff, but also store all of Allison's entertaining china, crystal, silverware, tablecloths, and napkins. They also are home to baskets of gloves, and scarves. They are standard kitchen cabinet depth, since we used kitchen base cabinets to create the bulk of the unit. So there is plenty of room up top for my favorite dining room display: the bar in a basket!

The side table and mirror here used to be in Allison's foyer, where the new doorway was created. So we moved it here, only for the time being. Eventually, this wall too, will come down and the dining room and kitchen will become one large space with a center island. For now though, it was great to have a spot for its reuse. Two captains chairs flank the table, and are perfectly positioned to pull up to the table when it extends from round to oval. I gave Allison these chairs, and she recovered the chair seats with a Waverly blue and white fabric here.

Here you can see the decorative rope braid trim that we added to the top of the counter surface, and to each of the shelf fronts. The case pieces have shelves that can be adjusted, and still need the crown molding, which we're waiting to install until it can go around the entire open space. That'll happen after the wall between the kitchen and dining room comes down.

Most everything on the shelves came from the attic of Allison's house, or from the basement at my house - which I was all too happy to give her. You can see the boho beads I used to sell on Cross Bottle Guy draped over a beautiful gilt column base. Allison's oldest daughter Grace was kind enough to model those beads for me when I first made and sold them - so I gave these to her as a thank you.

Isn't she beautiful!? I don't know why I stopped making these. They really are beautiful and so versatile. Perhaps they'll make a come back at Christmas.

The curtains are not custom, another cost savings; but they are back-tabbed which gives them a much easier fold back and a nicer look than the pole top curtains. They just kiss the floor, and are made from a synthetic silk. Allison knew she wanted purple, olive, and blue in the room - but couldn't figure out how to get them all to work together. I think we did it here, with splashes of purple in candles, and books in the case pieces, olive curtains, and blue and white fabric on the chairs. We've kept the room otherwise neutral for easy shifts to any color changes she wants to make.

For color, we spray painted the bindings of paperback books with gold and purple spray paint until we got the look we desired. We then tied bundles of them together with jute twine, and they made for really wonderful shelf filler. Allison is an avid collector of my cross bottles, so there are several of those in the dining room, too.

Allison also collects blue and white porcelain, as I do, and many of you. So a lot of it ended up in her dining room, including this little garden stool - which I've been told has become some sort of desk chair to that little console table for her youngest daughter. SO cute!

Here you can see the need for that crown molding, but again - one project at a time. We all know how that goes, right? The heavy wool rug with the bold, rich colors was replaced by this seagrass option with a fawn border. The whole room feels so much bigger, and brighter than it ever did before. We added light to the inside of the case pieces, along with 5-outlet strips to the top of each piece for Allison to be able to more conveniently plug in things - like crock pots, etc..

I love the top of this table, which was a honey oak before Allison stained it with an ebony and then walnut stain.

The case pieces have brushed nickel bin pulls on the drawers, and crystal knobs on the doors, to help tie in the crystal door knobs on the french doors, and the chandelier. The shelf styling, done by me, was really a lot of fun. I just went from room to room, and picked what I thought would look best. Sure, it left the rest of the house in shambles, but we can work on that later!

The room has really gracious windows, and gets a ton of natural light - which floods the room and adjoining foyer with a beautiful glow. We reused Allison's curtain rods, and just hung them higher to accommodate the new curtain length.

So there you have it. A BIG change from where we started, right? Alright, alright. Here's a before:

Told ya!

... Fun Vignette Time ...

I hope you enjoyed this little story of friendship and renovation. All of Allison's family LOVES the new room. She has hosted several family dinners with her extended family since we finished the renovation, and she and her family eat there every night. I told her that we'd have to wait a year before the kitchen wall came down if she wanted me to help - so, while it won't be anytime soon, keep your eyes peeled for more photos and stories of friendship and renovation!

Chrisley Knows Best ... The Decorated Mansion

Is anyone else addicted to this show? Having grown up in the south, I smile during every episode of Chrisley Knows Best thinking of those zippy one-liners my mother used to throw back at me during my rebellious years. For those of you who haven't watched the USA Network hit, it's about a Southern family (Georgia) who live in an amazing house and are starting a clothing company, aptly named: Chrisley and Co..

The episodes are 30-minutes, and take place primarily in their large home in Roswell, Georgia, just north of Atlanta. The house is lovely, and HUGE at 30,000 square feet. I had been looking for photos of the house and secrets behind who was responsible for the decor ... and I FOUND THEM! Just so happens, (likely because there is a reported $45 million bankruptcy) the house is for sale! So - realtor photos galore, thanks to Sotheby's!

The outside of the house is a sorta bastardized tudor, something they're calling "New American" .. and it's not really all that big considering the houses around it, in the prestigious gated community of Glenayre. It's hard to imagine from the front that it's 30,000 square feet, though. That's something more evident when looking at the house from the back.

A full 3-floors thanks to a walk out basement, the house is long, wide, and deep. Can you imagine decorating this place? And let me tell you - they are decorated! Now, I wasn't sure who was responsible for the decorating of the house, I has my guesses...

do you? I mean, there are decorators who definitely have this style, right ... even a few notable designers from Georgia. Here, in the sitting room of the master - I forged my first opinion ... Phoebe Howard. Are you seeing it?

Then, on the sleeping side of the room, the canopy bed, fully dressed along with the glass front secretary, patterned carpet, and clever mix of Swedish furniture with American antiques made me even more sure that Phoebe was responsible for this space. (I was wrong!)

So, I ran over to Phoebe's site, and searched and searched for these spaces ... they weren't there. Which means she wasn't responsible. Surely, with all the rooms on her site, when money like this gets spent - she would have definitely had it on the rotation. So I kept looking at the spaces - enjoying each one for the very Southern way they were finished, wondering who decorated Todd Chrisley's house?

I started getting to the more colorful rooms - like this bedroom with it's soft mossy green walls and coral accents. It had me thinking about another Atlanta designer, Suzanne Kasler. Looks a little like her, right?

In his daughter's room - I thought yep, Suzanne. The patterned carpet, the canopy bed, the fearless use of the the color pink! Surely this is a Kasler room. But nope. Wrong again.

In this room, I thought, heck - they've got enough money, maybe they had Charlotte Moss decorate the house? I mean the pleated shades, and use of the same fabric and wallpaper in so many rooms is totally Charlotte, right?

But, alas, wrong again. So - who, with such traditional taste could have decorated Todd Chrisley's house? Find out here! You can see more of the house here.

For more decor porn, this past episode (it airs on Tuesday nights), Todd - the father, Chase - his son, and Savannah - his daughter all go to NYC to purchase clothes directly from designers for their high-end clothing store. (Todd calls it the Bergdorf's of the South). The episode, like all the others, was great - but what was REALLY great, was the NYC hotel that they stayed in. What hotel? Well after a lot of digging ... and I do mean A LOT (NYC has over 4,000 hotels!!) I found it ... and now I want to stay there!

The Gramercy Park Hotel is a landmark, boutique hotel, located in the center of the city on Lexington Avenue. We've always stayed either on the upper west side on the park, or mid-town near all the theatres. But seeing the decor here has me thinking about booking a trip! (Or at least heading over and peeking around the lobby during our next trip!) You can see more of the hotel here.

Hope you enjoyed it - and if you watch the show, I'd love to know what you think of the Chrisley's ... and their extravagant lifestyle.
